Scales, Tales & Halloween: Explore the Reptile and Amphibian Study Merit Badge

3 min read

This Halloween, make room for a little wildlife discovery alongside the costumes and candy.

Snakes, frogs, and other creatures often appear in spooky stories. But studying real animals gives Scouts something even more interesting: a chance to ask questions, investigate myths, and discover how wildlife lives.

Join MeritBadgeCourses.com on October 31, 2026, for our online Reptile and Amphibian Study merit badge class. Bring your curiosity—and a few questions about the creatures you’ve always wanted to understand.

A Halloween Connection Worth Exploring

Have you ever heard a story about a snake or toad and wondered whether it was true?

That question fits this badge perfectly. One requirement asks Scouts to examine five superstitions or false beliefs about reptiles and amphibians, explain the facts, and share unusual behaviors or other true information about these animals. See the complete requirements.

Try making two columns in your notebook: “What I’ve Heard” and “What I Learned.” Write down a claim, investigate it using reliable resources, and bring your findings to your counselor.

The Halloween theme makes a fun starting point. Curiosity and careful research take it further.

What Will You Explore?

The Reptile and Amphibian Study merit badge introduces Scouts to identification, habitats, reproduction, conservation, and animal behavior.

For the first requirement, Scouts describe six reptile species and four amphibian species found in the United States, discuss their habits and habitats, and create observation-based sketches or photographs of four of them. This is just one part of the badge—not the complete checklist. Review Scouting America’s requirements.

As you learn, pay attention to details. What markings help distinguish one animal from another? Where does it live? What questions would you ask someone who cares for it?

How to Prepare for the October 31 Class

A little preparation will help you participate and get more from the session.

  • Review the class prerequisites. Read our Reptile and Amphibian Study requirements page and the instructions provided for your session.

  • Bring a notebook and pencil. Keep your questions, research, and observations together.

  • Choose something you’re curious about. Perhaps you want to understand how snakes move or how to tell similar-looking animals apart.

  • Check your Zoom setup. Have your camera and microphone ready so you can join the discussion.

You don’t need to arrive knowing all the answers. Come ready to learn and participate.

Observe With Care

Watching wildlife is an opportunity to slow down and notice things you might otherwise miss.

For casual observations, keep your distance and leave animals undisturbed. Use a camera’s zoom instead of moving closer, and don’t pick up an animal to identify it.

Record the location, date, surroundings, and behavior you noticed. If you aren’t certain what you saw, note that uncertainty and ask for help identifying it.

Discuss any animal-care activity with your counselor and parent or guardian before starting. Caring for an animal takes preparation and an understanding of its needs.

Plan Beyond Class Day

The October 31 session is part of the learning process. Attendance alone does not complete the merit badge.

Requirement 8 includes longer-term options, such as maintaining an animal for at least a month or making weekly observations of an exhibit animal over three months. Other options involve eggs and development. Review the full wording with your counselor before choosing your approach. Read requirement 8.

Keep your records organized and follow up with your counselor about unfinished requirements. The goal is to demonstrate what you’ve learned through your own work.
