Steps to Complete the Public Speaking Merit Badge:

 

Step 1: Complete the Pre-Work

Merit Badge Prerequisites:

Requirement #1: PREREQUISITE

Give a three- to five-minute introduction of yourself to an audience such as your troop, class at school, or some other group.

*Scouts will each share their 3–5-minute introduction during the online classroom*

Submit by: Submit outline via the JotForm. If you do not present during the online classroom, you will also need to submit a video of you completing this requirement via the JotForm.

 

Requirement #2: PREREQUISITE

Prepare a three- to five-minute talk on a topic of your choice that incorporates body language and visual aids.

Submit by: Submit outline, visual aids, reflection, and recording or note from Scoutmaster upon completion via JotForm

 

Requirement #3: 

Give an impromptu talk of at least two minutes, either as part of a group discussion or before your counselor. Use a subject selected by your counselor that is interesting to you but that is not known to you in advance and for which you do not have time to prepare.

*Scouts will complete this during the online classroom. There will be a short list of topics they will choose from*

Submit by: Completed during online classroom. Submit reflection via the JotForm.

 

Requirement #4: PREREQUISITE

Select a topic of interest to your audience. Collect and organize information about the topic and prepare an outline. Write an eight- to 10-minute speech, practice it, then deliver it in a conversational way.

*While this will be completed outside of the online classroom, we will discuss researching, outline, and delivery for longer speeches. *

Submit by: Submit outline, visual aids, reflection, and recording or note from Scoutmaster upon completion via JotForm.

 

Requirement #5: PREREQUISITE

Show you know parliamentary procedure by leading a discussion or meeting according to accepted rules of order; or by answering questions on the rules of order.

*Review “parliamentary procedure rules of order” to be able to discuss and answer questions during online classroom. *

Step 2: Attend the Online Class

• Join the Zoom session at your scheduled date and time using this link. It will be sent to the email address you used to sign up 1 hour after you signed up. If you don't see it check your junk and spam folder.

• Participation during the online session is required.

Step 3: Receive Your Blue Card

• • Scouts can save their work using the save button at the bottom of the classroom.

  • Deadline: Scouts have three months to complete this.
